Money-saving advice: Home decor tips

You may be saving up to decorate your home, but have you ever considered that the decorating decisions you make could save you money? Energy company E:ON shares its top tips for decorating that could save you pounds on your electricity bill.

  • Choose warm colours. Research from E:ON  found that reds and browns (76%) and yellows and ambers (53%) ranked as the colours that made people feel the warmest. Adding these colours to walls/feature walls or through bold artwork will help alleviate a frosty feeling in a room.
  • Use natural light to your advantage. Light bounces into your room through windows and glass/patio doors. Paint window sills in light reflective colours to help bring in the brightness!
  • Don’t cover your radiators. For heat to be able to circulate around a room efficiently, ensure that your radiators aren’t covered. Remove radiator covers and ensure furniture isn’t blocking heat transfer by placing it at least one foot from the radiator
  • Cosy up. Purchasing a higher tog duvet will keep you warm on chilly nights. Adding some beautiful blankets to your lounge should also prevent you reaching for the thermostat. Turning your thermostat down by one degree could save you £65 on your gas bill
  • Keep heat in. Lots of heat gets lost through windows. Choosing thick curtains will keep heat inside the room on cold winter days. It will also prevent solar heat gain on warm days (negating the need for air con)
  • Light bulb moment. LED lights use less energy, so consider switching from regular bulbs to save money on your electricity. Only use lights when you need then. Remembering to switch off just eight 50W halogen lights for one hour each day could save you up to £20 a year
