DIY Skills 'Dying Out' Among Younger Home Owners

DIY Skills 'Dying Out' Among Younger Home Owners

Home improvement skills are dying out among younger home owners, according to new research.

A study from  Halifax Insurance  found confidence in carrying out many DIY jobs is lower among younger householders.

More than half (53%*) of over 55s say they have the DIY skills to put up wallpaper, yet only 24%* of 18-24 year-olds feel able, and while 83%* of the 55 and over age group said they can paint, only 56%* of under 24s felt confident with a paintbrush.

Less than two thirds (62%*) of 18-24 year-olds felt competent enough to change a light bulb  compared to 91%* of over 55s.

Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at Halifax Insurance, said: “Lots of us take on DIY jobs and projects for a number of reasons whether it’s to save money, because they enjoy it or as a way to improve their home. Those planning DIY should check they have the right tools for the job, avoid taking on too much and call a qualified professional for gas, electrical or plumbing work.”

Last year alone, Halifax Insurance recorded over 16,500** accidental damage claims, including DIY-related incidents. In total the insurer paid out more than £9m* for accidental damage, costing an average of £565** per claim.

Householders are advised to check their insurance policy before embarking on a home improvement project. Accidental damage to some parts of the home such as sinks, baths and ceramic hobs is included in many home insurance policies, but taking out additional accidental damage cover could protect against common DIY mishaps such as spilling paint, drilling through pipes, or putting feet through ceilings.

Top DIY tips include:

  • Make sure you have all the correct tools and equipment for the job before you start to avoid coming unstuck later on
  • Plan a budget beforehand and stick to it
  • Call a professional for jobs involving gas, electrical or plumbing work
  • When choosing a tradesman, ask for references and certificates to demonstrate that they are competent

Contact your insurer if any work is being carried out which may alter the structure or layout of the home such as an extension or garage etc.

For major building works, you may need to seek planning permission from your local council.
